Vance Joy’s excitement and musical skill lit up the Gothic Theater last Tuesday, October 12. Vance’s talent was the highlight of the show for me. He hit every note and sounded simply pitch perfect. Joy’s talent was in highest form when he ditched the guitar for the ukulele during his most popular song, “Riptide.” Paired with his high ranging vocals, and backup band including two brass instruments, bass, and drums, Vance Joy was not a talent you wanted to miss.
Another highlight of the show, was his interaction with the crowd between songs. Before most songs, he would provide a brief explanation of what inspired him to make each. Hearing an artist reveal his inspirations in front of a cheering crowd, was an irreplaceable experience. His energized, meaningful, and charismatic performance all contributed to the amazing show
We caught up with Chappel Roan, an opener for Vance, after the show. Roan is on her first tour, and her School Nights EP is definitely worth a listen. We asked her, “What does music mean to you?” Chappel Roan’s answer was… “For me music is an outlet. I can use it to release emotion and to explore different parts of myself. It helps me face the parts of myself I don’t necessarily like.”
