Ogden Theater, 9/15
When Banks first appeared to the audience, people were instantly captivated. The singer sauntered through a haze of smoke with a sheer black veil over herself, followed by two backup dancers in similar outfits. Her opening song, “Poltergeist,” has an astonishingly eerie and layered voice behind it. Banks forced the entire audience watch and listen in awe. The choreography and lights created a stage presence that was unique and unforgettable.
Throughout the entire show, Banks created a new performance out of every song. Her slower songs came with slower stage movement, and her backup dancers appeared sporadically when needed. When performing her song, “Waiting Game,” The energy quickly slowed from her previous, more upbeat songs like “Gemini Feed” and “Fuck With Myself.” Banks’ voice traveled through the Ogden with beauty and power that could only be understood by being a witness.
While Banks is an extremely private person--especially on social media, her songs make you feel as though you have lived every story they have to tell. When performing “Crowded Places,” the singer asked the audience to put away their phones and be more present in that moment. It was a small gesture that made the audience even more invested than they already had been. She sang with passion and emotion, captivating everyone in the venue.
By the end of the show, the audience was still fascinated by every movement, listening to every lyric, and interacting with each other in a beautiful, intimate way. The atmosphere carried such an ambience, that will stay ingrained in my memories. Banks has a voice that critics will try and compare with other artists, however her live experience makes hers completely incomparable.
Banks’ latest release was her single, “Crowded Places,” in April. There is no word of a new album release, but one can only hope that more music is coming soon from Banks.
